Milpa Planting

Use Soil Health to Feed Your Neighbors

What Can You Do With Milpa?
Milpa Planting is a project teaching soil health concepts while growing food and building community. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate soil health benefits while building community connections. Learn more about milpa mix and milpa gardens from Green Cover Seed.

Check out the First Acre Program from Green Cover Seed if you want to work directly with Green Cover Seed. You will get enough seed to plant from 1000 sq. feet up to one acre. You will need to keep track of pounds harvested and volunteer hours.

2022 plantings: We are so excited to have a milpa planting at Sedgwick County Extension Master Gardeners Demo Garden, a new one-acre milpa planting near Clearwater, Common Ground Producers and Growers, Monteil Farms at Little Stars Therapy, and Garden Plain High School . Pollinator-friendly tips.

We had four plantings in 2021: an irrigated one-acre milpa planting near
Clearwater, and milpa spots at Friends University, Garden Plain High School, and KANSEL.  Green Cover Seed influenced another almost one-acre milpa planting in the Goddard area.

Our advisor is Ryan Speer of Jacob Farms, NACD Soil Health Champion, who has planted milpa the past four years. Read about him in Green Cover Soil Health Resource Guide, Seventh Edition, Page 42.

The Milpa Planting Project was inspired by a speech by Jimmy Emmons of Oklahoma at the 2017 No-Till On The Plains conference in Wichita, KS.

The Milpa Planting Project is funded by a Kansas Department of Agriculture, Division of Conservation, Water Resources(WR) On-Farm Trial grant.
