Milpa Planting

Use Soil Health to Feed Your Neighbors

Dan Klausmeyer planted almost one acre of milpa in a soybean field using milpa seed provided by Green Cover Seed. Dan planted the seed using the Sedgwick County Conservation District's 10 foot no-till drill. He planted into a rye cover crop and used a roller/crimper to roll down the rye. The rye cover crop protects the soil, preserves moisture in the soil and prevents weeds from sprouting.

Highlights: Renwick FFA learned soil health concepts while harvesting milpa and delivering the produce to a local convent.
