Lynn Buerki, known as "Mr. Conservation," began serving on the Conservation District board at age 19 in January of 1952. Devoted to conservation practices, especially tree planting, he served on the Board for 62 years . During that time, he planted over 500,000 bare root trees in Sedgwick County. To honor his legacy, a scholarship fund was established in June of 2020. The Lynn Buerki Memorial scholarship is intended to encourage qualified students to increase their interest in agricultural conservation at a Kansas institute of higher education, to obtain technical competence in some phase of agricultural conservation, and to pursue a career in this area of endeavor.
