Milpa Planting

Use Soil Health to Feed Your Neighbors

Max and Anne Tjaden provided the irrigated one acre location on the edge of an irrigation pivot. Green Cover Seed provided 35 pounds of seed through their First Acre program at no charge except shipping. Max planted the seed using the Sedgwick County Conservation District's 10 foot no-till drill. The goal is to teach soil health concepts while local groups harvest and distribute the produce in the Clearwater area.

Highlights:
Ninnescah Valley 4H Club challenged their members to harvest milpa greens and use them in a salad.
A Feds Feed Families harvest event delivered 240 lbs. of produce to the KS Food Bank and Clearwater Community Center.
Max Tjaden shared his broad ag knowledge with Mr. Hampton's Government students at Clearwater High School as they spent their community service hours to harvest and share milpa.
Milpa flowers were used in a wedding.
